#3. Nissan Leaf – The 2014 model will be able to wirelessly recharge itself, according to reports. No more power cables! The fuel economy for the 2013 model gets approxiamately 115 MPG, so expect even better with the 2014 model. Estimated listing price? $35,000 - $38,000.
#2. 2013 Honda Fit EV – The
electric vehicle gets a 118 MPG combined rating. Its runs on a
lithium-ion battery. A full charge takes about 3 hours or less. The Fit
Ev, however, is available as a lease only, in certain states. Lease cost? $389/month. Check out

#1. 2014 Chevrolet Spark – 119
mpg-equivalent combined city/highway fuel economy rating is the best
among the bunch. 0 to 60 mph in under 8 seconds because of its
“innovative electric propulsion system drive unit paired with a
lithium-ion battery.”
Note: This one is only available to residents in California and Oregon.
Honorable Mention – Toyota Prius 2014. Toyota is making plug-in capability the standard for all prius vehicles going forward. The plug-in cars currently have no timetable for their release, however. The current 2013 model gets around 50 mpg highway and city, with the plug-in model getting better than that. The plug in base model can be leased for $229 a month for 36 months. Plug ins cost about $8,000 - $10,000 more than normal Prius models.
As gas prices continue to soar, these cars are clearly the future of the road. Look for prices to drop over the years as production costs drop to make these vehicles.
